Spring Gardening Preparation

It’s that time of year again—the green things are making their annual comeback! Canada has experienced a much warmer winter than we’re accustomed to seeing, and the snow is already melting in Sherwood Park, Edmonton and Calgary. Now is the time to get prepared for your landscape.

If you haven’t found the time to plan your garden, we can help with that. Annuals, perennials and shrubs are already available, and a variety of these beauties is sure to brighten up your landscape and bring your home into full bloom.

Spring cleaning is your first step; it’s important to get rid of all the dead leaves and last year’s long-since rotted plants.

Next, understanding how much sun your plants will receive is key; once you know that, it’s easier to choose the flowers you want.

For residents of Sherwood Park and Edmonton, plants labelled for Zone 3 are the hardiest. Maidenhair fern, Carpathian bellflowers, Lily of the Valley, and the Stella del Oro daylily are just a few examples of the elegant perennials you can successfully grow in these communities.

Note: If you have perennials left over from last year, now is the time to divide them, especially if they are overcrowded.

Edging the plant beds and improving soil quality is another important task. Organic matter, compost, peat moss, and clay are among the many options available, depending on the needs of your soil. If you’re not sure what your soil requires, it’s very easy to test it.

Keep an eye on the weather when it comes time to purchase plants; if it’s still fairly cold, then it’s better to wait a few more weeks. Otherwise the stems might weaken while they sit inside your home. That being said, if you already happen to have a greenhouse on the property, you can buy them any time and just plant as soon as the weather is right.

Once you have everything in place, you need to focus on maintenance. This doesn’t have to be an overwhelming task; there are watering hoses and sprinklers with automated timers, pre-mixed fertilizers, pest control solutions, and special tools for weeding and deadheading as needed, available at your local gardening centre.

One thing you do need to keep in mind is that varying plants have individual needs, so it’s a good idea to keep a notebook of all the plants in your garden and understand what they need, and when they need it.

Finally, your spring masterpiece need not be limited to flowers: vegetables, grasses, and small trees are all excellent choices for brightening up your home. Additionally, this is also the perfect time to begin decorating your landscape with signature pieces such as a fountain, gazebo, etc.
