Fruit Trees in Alberta

One of the most common requests we get from clients is to include an apple tree in their yard.  More often than not what they mean is they would like to have an edible plant.  Most people do not realize that there are so many more options than just apple trees that you can grow in Alberta.

Below I have included a number of trees, shrubs and perennial fruiting plants that are all hardy right here in Edmonton.

A bit about them: Apple trees have beautiful spring flowers, and need to be planted in pairs to properly pollinate.  There are many different sizes and varieties that do very well and are very productive.  Like all fruit trees they should not be planted near patios, decks, or walkways as they can be very messy and a lot of work to keep up with the crop.

A few different types that grow here: Battleford, Honeycrisp, September Ruby, Goodland, Multi-graft (self pollinating)

How big they get: As big as 20’ tall and wide and as small as 15’ tall by 12’ wide

What is great about them: Very hardy, many varieties, highly productive

What is not so great about them: Messy, yields can sometimes be too big to manage, susceptible to apple maggot

Be brave, plant your own orchard and keep bringing your outdoor living dreams to life!
